This is a collection of photos captured through the camera by Thomas Wimberly in 1958-59. Deyoung went from being an outlying, discontigous, small city street to Illinois new Route 13 and one of the towns largest arteries in only a couple of years. Most of the homes and many of the landmarks no longer exist due to the highways width truncating the front yards of existing lots. The switch to Illinois Route 13, now bypassing the center of town and the Public Square, caused much fear and consternation with downtown businesses. The fear was well founded in most cases since many downtown businesses ended up relocating to the outlying arteries of town. Thanks to Tom for having the foresight to capture and retain these photos.
