Barney Boren, age 78, died at 3:50 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at his home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin with the Rev. Paul E. Tirey officiating. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the VFW and American Legion Posts.
Visitation was Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Herrin or Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Mr. Boren was employed by Credit-Thrift from 1948 to 1962. He became co-owner of the Marion Finance and Jackson and Gray Insurance and then the co-owner of B&G Young Modern Shop.
He was the Williamson County Clerk for 34 years from 1966 to 2000, the longest consecutive elected official. He was a member of the Herrin Prairie Lodge 693 Masons for over 50 years. He was also a member of the VFW, a life member of the Herrin Elks and a member of the County Clerks Association.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a Non Commissioned Officer Yeoman-2.
He was born April 27, 1923, in Energy to Effie and Loa Boren. Both preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Boren of Herrin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Margaret Boren of Herrin and Richard and Marsha Boren of Searcy, Ark,; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Paul Roach of Johnston City; one brother, Benny Boren of Hesperia, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Mildred and husband, Bill Cooke of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Bobby Jones of Johnston City; grandchildren, Michael, Ryan, Gretchen, Kristen and Caitlin Boren and Paul Eugene and Joseph Roach; two great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two brothers, Robert and Earl Boren and one sister, Grace Neilson also preceded him in death.
