According to turn of the century Marion resident and G.A.R. member and officer George W. Young in 1904, “There was also organized a Post at Union Grove Church and one at Marion in September and October, 1866, but the names and numbers have not been preserved.”
Any record of this early Post’s organization and charter members appear lost to time, however, its re-invigoration in the 1880’s tells us who some of the early members were as compiled from the Post’s Adjutant Reports attached to this post and of some of their deaths transcribed by the Williamson County Historical Society.
The local GAR met the third Monday of each month in the Odd Fellows Hall. In the fall of 1887 they had 23 members in good standing and in 1898 there were 29. The last report was filed December 31, 1914 after the death of James P. Copeland and with the approaching death of George W. Young in 1915, both thought to be the backbone of the organization.
