J.W. “Bill” Dungey was born at Barlow, Kentucky, June 12, 1904, the son of William and Lula (Rasco) Dungey. He was married Mary Starrick, owner of the Mary Dungey Real Estate Agency.
Dungey was a plasterer by trade and had operated as a construction contractor. He served as a Marion City Commissioner from 1955 to 1959.
The former city official, who lived at 906 N Highland St., was driving west on W. College Street 3:50 p.m. when his pickup truck ran off the pavement and into the yard at the home of Ora Kirby at the corner of West College and South Holland Street. The truck knocked down a cedar tree and stopped against another tree in the Kirby yard.
John William (Bill) Dungey, 71, a former city commissioner, was dead on arrival at Marion Memorial Hospital at 4:15 p.m Friday, September 5, 1975.
His brother, Lonnie Dungey, 54, retired Marion fire chief, died of a heart attack August 30, 1975, only a week prior.
Besides his widow he was survived by a step son, Vernell McAlpin, Covina, Calif., two sons, William Carl Dungey, Marion Rt. 2, and Earl Ray Dungey, Marion, and two daughters, Mrs. P. E. (Deana) Baker, St. Charles Mo., and Mrs. Keith (Marilyn) Chapman, Paducah, Ky. There are 14 grand-children and two great-grandchildren.
Also surviving were five sisters, Mrs. Jessie Snyder, Herrin, Mrs. John (Kathleen) Rader, Mrs. Elmer (Maurice) Geer, and Mrs. Orville (Mary Louise) Swafford, Marion, and Mrs. William (LaVerne) Stone, Chicago. Another brother, Wilson Dungey and two grandchildren preceded him in death.
Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Plasterers Local Union No. 331 and Fellowship Lodge No. 89, A.F. & A.M…
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. James Bryant officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Funeral arrangements were held at the Mitchell Funeral Home.
