Raymond L. McCormick, former Marion City Commissioner, WWII veteran and civic leader, was born on Tuesday, August 2, 1921, in Marion, the son of Ray and Ora (Cothran) McCormick, being one of five children. A Marion directory places the family in a home at 1204 E. Parham Street in 1928.

A letter received from Raymond while he was serving with Battery C of the 13th Marines in the Fifth Division on Iwo Jima dated Feb. 28, 1945, indicated that they had accompanied the Marine “devil dogs” in invading the island.
He faithfully served the next three years in the South Pacific Theater and was involved in the taking of the Japanese Island of Iwo Jima. He personally saw from a distance of 1500 yards, the raising of the American flag that is famously known today. After the successful capture of Iwo Jima he returned to the United States and enrolled in Officer Cadet School in Quantico, Virginia in July 1945. Shortly after he had enrolled, the war ended, and he was honorably discharged on September 20, 1945.
