Mrs. Alta Ashworth, a widow, ran away from her home in the west part of the city early last week and left in the home alone her six children aged 3 to 11 years. Harley Felkins of Coulterville was said to be the motive. She claims that he promised to marry her if she would “ditch the kids.” The half dozen starving, freezing little children were found in the home last Tuesday by Mrs. Minnie Smith of the DuQuoin Children’s Home. They had been alone since Saturday. The mother gave a neighbor girl of 14 years a dollar and a half to buy food but the girl came to town and put the money into a looking glass, some face paint and powder and dolled up and forgot the little ones. Mrs. Smith had the mother brought before the county judge where she willingly consented to separate from her little ones. The woman was left a widow about two years ago, her husband getting killed in a mine, and from his death she received some $3,000, all of which has slipped through her hands in the meantime.
