Hemphill, whose correct name is Peyton Roderick Hemphill, son of Peyton Hemphill, born in Carbondale, lived in Marion 10 years before his parents moved to West Frankfort two years ago. His throat was cut from ear to ear and his head smashed in. Calcaterra had been stabbed through the heart. A new butcher knife was found near the body of Hemphill. Ray Chapman, son of Mr. & Mrs. Everett Chapman of South 11th Street in Herrin, shortstop with the Cleveland Americans, died at 5 o’clock Monday morning from injuries received the previous afternoon during the game between the Cleveland team and the New York Yankees at the Polo grounds in New York. He was struck on the head by a pitched ball. The tragic happening came in the 5th inning when he undertook to dodge an underhand ball thrown by Mays, the pitcher. He was taken to a hospital where it was found an operation was necessary, but the operation failed. Mays, in discussing the accident, said he threw a “sailer” – one that breaks sharply on one side, due usually to a rough spot on the cover. He asked for another ball before pitching to Speaker, who followed Chapman to the plate, and the ball which fatally injured the shortstop was thrown out of the game. “Chatty” as he was known to his hundreds of admirers in Williamson County, broke into the big league in 1912. Previous to that he played with Davenport in the Three-1 league and also played with the Toledo team in the American association. He was rated higher and higher in the baseball world until he was considered the best shortstop in the world because of his ability to it better than .300, coupled with his excellent fielding skill. He married Kathleen Marie Daly/Daily, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Martin Daly of Cleveland on 29 Oct 1919. The marriage was the culmination of a romance which developed after Miss Daly became attracted to Ray through witnessing games in which he played. This was to have been his last year in baseball as he had planned to go into business with his father-in-law who is president of the East Ohio Gas Company. Besides his widow, he is survived by his parents, one brother Roy (Cannon) [as written], and one sister, Margaret, all of Herrin. The body was brought to Cleveland and met at the depot by hundreds of fans. Ten years ago he was a miner at Herrin and a member of Local 986, United Mine Workers of America. He was one of the fastest men in baseball. On 27 Sep 1917, on Tim Murnane Day, he won a loving cup for the fastest time in circling the bases, doing it in 14 seconds. In 1917, he broke all major league hit records with a total of 67, and also led the American League in sacrifices in the following two years. HN 19 Aug MDR 17 Aug & CH 20 Auq
