Richard F. Follis of Johnston City received word last week that the body of his son, Earl Benard Follis, had been received in New York and would be shipped to Johnston City for burial. He was the youngest son, born 24 Apr 1893 and died 6 Oct 1918. He went to Gem City Business College at Quincy, Illinois where he completed the course but later became a mechanic and at the age of 21 went to Miami, Fla. where he worked as a chauffeur for a transportation company. When trouble arose with Mexico, he joined the Florida State Militia and served on the Mexican border during the punitive expedition. He was honorably discharged and then volunteered for service in the coastal artillery and was assigned to Co. I at Fort Severns, Ga. where he was stationed two and a half years. He volunteered during the war for earlier overseas service and was called in the September 1918 automatic replacement draft. He went to Camp Merritt, N.J. from which camp he sailed overseas on September 25 on the Convoy Otranto. The voyage was one of the roughest ever experienced and finding themselves unable to land at Glascow, Scotland, as ordered, they were forced to proceed toward Liverpool, England. While in the English Channel their ship was jammed in the storm by another transport and sank immediately, taking 458 of our brave soldiers down. The body of Follis was recovered five days later on the shores of Ishly Island, off of Scotland, and buried there. His parents had not seen him since 1914 when he sailed for overseas and the entire community extends their deepest sympathy. The funeral will be conducted by the American Legion post at Johnston City and the complete announcements will be made upon the arrival of the body in this county. The funeral will be Thursday at the home. MDR Monday 25 & 27 Oct 1920

For the part he took in helping to carry out the murderous intrigue of Frank Bianco to make the wife of Marco Calcaterra of West Frankfort his wife, Setimo Desantis will swing from the gallows. This was the verdict late Saturday night. The trial lasted six days. Frank Bianco killed himself Thursday night in his cell at the county jail, hanging himself with his underclothing which he tore into strips and tied together. Bianco took affectionate interest in Marco Calcaterra’s wife when the two families lived in the same house at Bellaire, Ohio. He sought to make the woman his wife and deemed it necessary to kill the brother of the woman and then the husband. After a conference with DeSantis, Bianco succeeded in having the brother, Amel Calcaterra, brought to Royalton on 2 Aug, but could not induce him to come there without his American boy companion, Tony Hemphill. The boys were to look at an automobile at Royalton. They were cruelly murdered and their bodies buried in the woods near Royalton. Testimony showed DeSantis had been hired by Bianco for $200 to kill Marco Calcaterra, the husband of the woman he sought to make his wife. In January 1920 a family lived in West Frankfort, a mother, two sons and two daughters. The older sister had married a man of the same name. This daughter was ROSE, the wife of Marco Calcaterra. In January the Marco Calcaterra family and the Bianco family moved to Bellaire, Ohio where they lived in the same house. There was a son, Paul Bianco, in the Bianco family. They later moved to Shady Side, Ohio, a suburb of Bellaire and shared the same house. Bianco is said to be a South Italian and believed in and practiced the black art. He is said to have an affection for Mrs. Calcaterra and encouraged this affection by his magic, such as the reading of futures and appearing in costume representing the devil. He told them they could not shoot at the devil because any bullets fired would be deflected and kill the person who fired them. The entire family was in fear of him and were forced to sign statements in their own blood. Bianco took Mrs. Calcaterra and ran away but was arrested in Wheeling, West Virginia and she returned home. Bianco and his son arrived in West Frankfort where the plan was hatched to get the boys to go to Royalton. After his arrest, DeSantis made a confession. Bianco shot Tony Hemphill above the eye. Amel Calcaterra was stabbed. Bianco and his son returned to Ohio, driving day and night. The jury was not informed of the suicide of Bianco until after the trial closed. CH 17 Dec
