Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Hendrickson are entitled to and are no doubt receiving the sympathies of every citizen in Marion. Last Sunday, they followed to his eternal rest their only baby, Aud Leo, aged about two and a half years. Scarcely a year ago, they were subjected to a like affliction. EP 7 Oct 1880

A.B. Hendrickson, 43, was killed Saturday night at a Republican meeting at Crab Orchard. A row came up between William Slankard and Robert Parks Jr. Hendrickson tried to restore peace and was stabbed in the chest and back and received an 8 inch cut down and around his neck. It is said Thomas Hilliard did it. He is still at large. Bob Parks, Vol Rich and Milo Burnett were arrested as accessories. Mr. Hendrickson was a resident of Marion and served in Co C 31st 111 Vols in the Civil War. He left a wife and 6 children. Burial was in Union Grove under IOOF. While Milo Erwin was speaking at Crab Orchard, Thomas Hilliard, about 20 years old, Robert Parks Jr., about 20 years old and Val Rich, about 25 years old, called him a liar. MM 14 Oct 1880
Out of respect for Bruce Hendrickson, who was an engineer for Mann and Edwards Mill, the engine was draped in mourning. He had worked there 10 years. EP 14 Oct 1880

The new Methodist Episcopal Church at Crab Orchard, Corinth Circuit, was dedicated 24 Oct. Rev. C.L. Cline was supposed to have officiated, but failed to show. Pastor A.B. Rohrbough preached the dedicatory sermon and raised the amount ($30) necessary to free the house of debt. $155 was raised. MM 4 Nov 1880
Last Thursday, Ezra Halstead, 14 years old, employed at the slope of Carterville Mine, started down the slope alongside the car that carried coal to surface…. tried to get around car and was thrown underneath and dragged and mangled…. both thighs broken and body bruised and crushed…. died Saturday… was son of Widow Halstead, a sister of N.E. Saturday night at a dance held at residence of Newton Mann of Carterville, John Mart Robinson became intoxicated, raised a row and was put out. He drew a revolver and shot Vincent Cagle through the heart, killing him instantly, then fired 5 shots at random and fled. EP 11 Nov 1880

Murphysboro Era – Monday evening Nicholis Bamberger, our city barber, was shaving David Butcher of Somerset Township…. lathered his face and gave three strokes of razor and said, “Oh, I feel so bad,” dropped razor and fell dead. MM 25 Nov 1880
On Monday of last week, while Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Whittington were absent from their home 4 miles southwest of Carbondale, Ellen Jourdan, 12 years old, whom they had taken to raise, rushed from the house enveloped in flames. Joseph Hopper was 80 years old last Sunday. His son, M.R. Hopper invited a number of gentlemen from Marion to celebrate, some of them the oldest citizens of this place: A.T. Benson, S.S. Ireland, John H. Manier, Dr. A.N. Lodge, John A. Ensminger, A.G. Sheppard, CM. Kern, J.N. Russell, M.W. Robertson, P.H. Lang, Dr. R.M. Hundley, N.B. Calvert, C.M. Edwards, M.C. Campbell, J.B. Bainbridge, I.N. Privett, J.P. Copeland, M. CantoR and the editor of the Press. Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Russell prepared a bountiful dinner and Elder A.T. Benson offered prayer. After dinner, a box of the best cigars was passed and Uncle Joe played a couple of tunes on the organ. The body of friends then wrote their autographs with their respective ages in a very handsome album. Uncle Joe was made a Mason 16 Sep 1853 and made Tyler of Fellowship Lodge No. 89, AF and AM Dec 1863. He came from New York in 1850 and has resided in Marion 30 years. EP 9 Dec 1880

Deaths:
William Erwin was killed last week in a saloon in Galatia. He was striking at a man with a billiard cue when the man took the cue away and crushed his skull with it. [MM 6, Jan 1881 says Esquire William Erwin informs us it is supposed William Erwin who was struck with a billiard cue will die, his skull being fractured.]
Nathan Schafer, colored, living a short distance southeast, died Monday of pneumonia.
The wife of Frank Rice, of this city, died, the 18th of childbirth and erysipelas. She leaves three children. Burial was in Marion Cemetery.
