Theodore Aikman has returned from Texas. He took sick as soon as he arrived. MM 10 Jan 1884

James H. Robinson, 35, died Tuesday of pneumonia at his residence 4 miles east. He was ill one week. He leaves a wife and 4 small children. Burial was in the old Marion Cemetery. MM 17 Jan 1884

Cottage Home – A four and one half pound girl was born to Dr. M.D. Baker. A girl was born to Hen Morris on the 5th.

Jack Bradshaw was stabbed by Hamp Carter and seriously cut at a shooting match at Bradshaw’s store, 2 miles south. MM 17 Jan 1884

Thomas J. Goodall, 41, died Jan 18 of pneumonia at his residence. Burial was in the new cemetery. MM 24 Jan 1884

Tom Russell who killed George Bulliner on the Marion Road near Carbondale on the night of Dec 12, 1873 and has been a fugitive since then, gave himself up last week to Jackson County authorities.  MM 24 Jan 1884

Logan Sullivan was killed in Somerset Township, Jackson County. A dance was in progress at the home of one Robinson. A sister of the Sullivan boys had separated from her husband and one of the Stevens boys made a disparaging remark about the wife. Arthur Sullivan called him to account for it. A quarrel ensued and a brother of Stevens came upon the scene. John Sullivan called to his brother, Logan, that there were two upon him and when Logan came out the Stevens boys fell upon him one of them stabbed him in the breast. Mrs. Arthur Stevens picked up a chair and wanted to get into the fight. John and Arthur Stevens were arrested. Arthur was held without bail and John’s bail was $2000. Mrs. Stevens was discharged, she swearing that she did not know what she was doing when she picked up the chair, being excited. MM 28 Feb 1884

$3000 reward. The Board of County Commissioners will pay $1000 for the apprehension and conviction of each and every murderer or murderers of David A. Last Saturday, William Vancil, a lad who had been driven from his home in Malden, Missouri, was picked up in Cairo in a destitute condition by a committee of traveling salesmen consisting of E.P. Majors, William Sayers, E.K. Brinkman of St. Louis, I.B. Close of Belvidere, Illinois, Alber Goelitz of Belleville, J.K. Dickerson of Danville and F.N. Brown of St. Louis. He was brought to Marion and provided with a suit of clothes bought at Cantor’s and “fixed up” generally. He had been subsisting on what he could earn blacking boots. He was taken to St. Louis and will be sent to school and cared for at the expense of the “committee.” EP 24 Apr 1884

A fire at Creal Springs Tuesday morning destroyed Spencer’s Drug Store and the contents which had a small insurance, J.M. Eubanks’ Store and residence which goods were saved and the William Davis residence which had no insurance. EP 24 Apr 1884

Mrs. Logan declares that General Logan, so far from being an illiterate man, has a knowledge of French, German and Italian and also speaks Greek with fluency. This is a timely announcement. What the country needs particularly at this time is a president who can speak Greek. EP 24 Apr 1884

Last Saturday, 5 miles northwest of this place, Jeff Cox made a horrible discovery. He was engaged in notifying men in his district to work the roads. He called at the residence of a family named Sullivan and upon going into the house he saw a woman, who proved to be Mrs. Sullivan, lying with one of her arms in the fireplace and her face covered with blood. He called in some persons who were passing and meantime began washing the woman’s face with some water and a cloth and while doing so the woman expired. She was not known to be subject to fits, but that she had a fit and had fallen into the fire during the spasm is about the only reasonable conclusion arrived at. An altercation occurred at Hord and Sams saloon in Carterville last Friday between town marshal Hudgens and Bennett Stotlar Hudgens received some ugly gashes on his throat and Stotlar was dangerously wounded by pistol shots. MM 1 May 1884

Bennett Stotlar of Carterville, who was shot by J.T. Hudgens, town marshal of Carterville on Apr 25, while the latter was trying to make the former keep the peace, died of his injuries on the 10th. Stotlar was wounded in the left side of the chest and a piece of bone bore upon an artery and caused its injury and final bursting and he bled to death. Coroner Brock held an inquest and the verdict was he came to his death by a pistol shot fired by J.T.Hudgens. Hudgens is under $1,000 bond. Stotlar leaves a wife and no children. EP 15 May 1884

The wife of Jesse Casey, 4 miles north, died Tuesday of heart disease. EP 15 May 1884

The wife of Lysander Eubanks of Creal Springs, died Tuesday of a hemorrhage of the lungs. She leaves a husband and 8 grown children. JOHN A. LEE of this city is a brother. Burial was at Creal Springs.   EP 15 May 1884

Ill Vols., who suffered the hardships of camp life for 4 years and the horrors of Andersonville for 6 months, has been laid to rest beneath the silent clod, where the wicked cease to trouble and the weary are at rest. Mary Ann Corder, a poor widow lady living west of Marion, died Friday after a long and painful illness. For some time past she had been depending upon the liberality of neighbors for substance, but shortly before she died she was taken in charge by the county. She leaves 2 small children. John Norris was found dead in bed Friday morning. His wife woke up about 4 a.m. and discovered him dead, though his body was not yet cold. He was 58 and lived 7 miles southwest of Marion. MM 19 Jun 1884

John P. Goodall, 24, son of John and Sarah, died last Saturday. In his early years, he was a bright, handsome, intelligent youth. As time went on, a disease took its dreadful hold upon him and dethroned his mind, in which state he remained until a short time before he died. He joined the Christian Church under the ministry of Elder Trickett. It was a peculiar phase of his illness that he never lost sight of his religion and in his last hours when sanity returned to him he demonstrated clearly that his faith was still strong. Alice Buckley, daughter of Judge Buckley, living near this city, married Thursday F.M. Alexander of Reno, Nevada. She is a graduate of Southern Illinois Normal the same class and year as Mr. Alexander. Dr. Allyn of Carbondale performed the ceremony and they left for Reno where they will teach school the following term. MM 21 Aug 1884

Cherry Valley – J. J. Halley and wife lost a babe, 6 hours old on the 14th. It is now a shining star in Heaven while the parents are left here below to battle with the trials and troubles of this world. MM 28 Aug 1884

Saturday night a crowd was returning from Creal Springs and began running the horses at a pretty good rate. Joe Ecker, living near New Burnside, was thrown and instantly killed. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery in New Burnside. MM 28 Aug 1884

A telegram to the Globe-Democrat says a young school teacher named Daniel Gage was fatally shot Tuesday a few miles south of Vienna by David Avery because Gage had bid on a wheat stack of Avery’s which had been levied on. Avery burnt the stack, then shot Gage and while running, stopped long enough to fire a stack for a neighbor who had been instrumental in the suit.  MM 28 Aug 1884

The stepson of Ed Grimes was bit by a highland moccasin snake Friday. He was trying to split a log and the wedge fell in it. He reached in to get it and was bit three times.   MM 4 Sep 1884

Though only two years old, Creal Springs has the largest and best constructed private educational institute in Southern Illinois. The Creal Springs Seminary opened the 22nd with 23 pupils. ASYLUM CHILDREN – A company of children, mostly boys aged from 7 to 14 years, from the New York Juvenile Asylum, will arrive in Carbondale at the Gager House Friday morning, Nov. 14th. Homes are wanted for them with families where they will receive kind treatment and enjoy fair advantages. They are mostly of respectable parentage, promising and desirable and worthy of good homes. They may be taken on trial for three weeks and afterwards, if all parties are suited, they will be indentured until they are of age. Persons desiring to take these children on trial are requested to meet them at the Gager House Friday morning, Nov. 14, as they will leave Carbondale Friday night.
