John W. Willeford, 83, employed on the first paper printed in Williamson County, The Western Family Monitor, established by his father in 1819 [as written] in Marion, is visiting his daughter, Mrs. W.H. Perry. His home is in Atlanta, Ga. He states that the Marion Intelligencer was another paper established in Marion in the early days when the only papers in the lower part of the state were at Shawneetown, Belleville and Springfield. His father brought the first printshop to the county in 1841, establishing a printing business in Marion. Mr. Willeford tells how the printers in the early days stood about and chuckled over the supposition that their trade was absolutely safe from being encroached upon by labor saving devices then being invented because they were confident no machine could be devised to set type. He laughs now to think how badly they were fooled. He went in the print shop 75 years ago and still carries one of his first make-up rules which is worn so thin that it is now flexible. He had an argument on 31 Aug with the father of Harry Jackson and put in jail, was released in the afternoon and his gun returned. He then went to Freeman Spur where he met Harry Jackson and L.D. Brown in an automobile. Colyer jumped on the running board and opened fire. Jackson was killed with the first shot and a stray shot killed Brown who was sitting in the same seat as Jackson. Roy J. Mansker, 19, son of Mr. & Mrs. Philip Mansker, formerly of this city, but now of Beebe, Arkansas, died in an unoccupied barracks of the old 57th Infantry area at Camp Polk, Ark. The body was found Tuesday. A 45 caliber steel-jacketed pistol bullet had entered the top of his head and passed entirely through the head, emerging beneath the chin and found in his clothing. The fact that no clue from which the bullet could have been fired was found in the building obviates the theory of suicide. He attended an entertainment at the Red Cross convalescent home on Thanksgiving night and this was the last time he was seen alive. A platter containing remnants of turkey and dressing was found near the body and scraps of apples, oranges and other articles of food were scattered over the floor. CH 12 Dec

At the ripe old age of 81 years, Thomas G. Senese, father of Rev. E. Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Church here Saturday morning. Solemn requiem high mass was sung by Father Senese, assisted by Fathers Kelley and Picard. It is estimated that fully 5,000 people were at Mt. Carmel Cemetery when interment was made.
