Many Improvements in Business Houses on the Square and North Market
Despite Shortages of Building Materials, Stores and Sales Rooms Are Being Modernized As Rapidly As Possible Now.
The Republican recently printed a story about some of the improvements made on West Main Street and today a few of the business places on the Public Square and North Market Street are listed. This is still, only a partial list of the work being done to modernize and improve the business places of Marion and vicinity.
Marion merchants and business firms are bending every effort to make their places more attractive and more efficient for serving the public.
Sherman’s Department Store on the Public Square has taken over the Turnage Feed Store in its rear and converted it into a storage and shelving workroom. In addition, three separate compartments are being constructed for women to use in trying on dresses. Altogether, about 1,500 sq. ft. of space is being added. This will place the store in a better position to serve the public, Jerry Combs, Manager, said today.
The Dotty Shop, 204 Public Square, has recently installed a new type show case for lingerie and sportswear, Leonard Safofsky, Manager, said today. Everything to sell is open to view by the public for the goods are displayed on open glass shelves behind large glass sliding doors. The whole case is indirectly lit by fluorescent lights.
The Sally Shoppe, northwest corner, Public Square, has recently painted its front.
Campbell’s Drug Store, 200 N. Market, has had a new asphalt tile floor covering laid, the ceiling painted and fluorescent lights installed. Roy Campbell plans to have the booths repainted at once.
J.V. Walker and Sons Clothing Store and Cline-Vick Drug Co. northeast corner, Public Square, have repainted the canopy over their respective store fronts. Cline-Vick has installed air conditioning and is repainting the lettering on its windows.
The B and B Shoe Store, southeast corner, Public Square, next to South Market Street, has been completely remodeled. A modern glass entrance has been built, Celotex wall paneling and ceiling installed and the newest type flush fluorescent lighting set in.
J.B. Heyde Sons furniture store, 204-206 N. Market has been busily remodeling and plans are being made for further improvements later on. Booths for Frigidaire products are being set up now. The show case windows in front were discarded and the display lowered to the floor level of the store which is being decorated inside and out. Fluorescent lights will be put in soon and complete redecoration will be done quickly as the materials become available, Heyde said.
