Jimmy Stewart, beloved City Commissioner of Marion for 11 years, was born on May 30, 1942 in Marion to Clayton Stewart and Lucille Cash.
He married Fran Mathis on June 2, 1962 in Creal Springs who preceded him in death on June 3, 2002.
Stewart spent decades working for the General Telephone Company as a repairman. Continue reading
City Annexes Right of Way West of Marion
State right of way along New Rt. 13 westward from Interstate 57 to Broeking Road was annexed this week to Marion by the City Council.
Robert Hall clothing store is included in the annexation.
This council action paves the way for businesses along the highway that want city service to petition for annexation into the city. Continue reading

Plans are being prepared for improvement of Marion Street lighting, Commissioner Robert Connell said Monday.

It should go without saying that coal mining, even today, is a hazardous occupation. Needless to say, it was even more so in the early days when miners dealt with mules, hazardous gas, open flame lamps and sticks of dynamite on a daily basis. Because so many early mining deaths went unreported except for footnotes in the local papers, many of the stories of miners dying doing their job remain a blank in genealogical family trees.
