In 1879, Martin L. Baker formed a partnership with John H. Duncan and engaged in the retail hardware and furniture trade. The business of the firm prospered and in the fall of 1903 the business was incorporated under the name of Duncan-Baker Hardware Co., capital stock $30,000.00; a branch store established at Johnston City and a jobbing department added. I am fairly certain that the Commercial Hotel at 303 N. Market Street was created out of necessity. For years this location had been the home of a very large family. John Henry and Almira Catherine (Barham) Reynolds had seen the birth of 12 children and already the deaths of at least three or four. Continue reading
The General Telephone Company building was originally located at 201 N. Van Buren St., and was the one used by the Ohio and Mississippi Valley Telephone Co. The original building was constructed by Joab Goodall, but has been remodeled several times. Continue reading
