The old jail building on South Van Buren Street was completed in 1913 at a cost of $140,000. It was built by the firm of Sam Fuller and Will Pulley. Its jail section was constructed to accommodate a maximum of 48 prisoners, four times the capacity of the previous jail which was located on South Madison Street across the street from the present entrance to the rear of the post office parking lot. A raid into unspecified establishments in the city around 1958 yielded this large pile of scrap when the Marion Police Department was done with it. Shown are OfficerJack Stephens and Chief of Police Charles Edwards, both Marion residents.

I found this for sale on Ebay and couldn’t resist posting it. Henry Scott Harris was Sherriff of Williamson County from 1902 to 1906 when the Coal Belt Railway was just getting cranked up.
The first Williamson County Jail was a log house built by Squire Howell and was purchased on January 8, 1840. Continue reading

Funding was provided by the Greater Marion Area Chamber of Commerce, Williamson County Tourism Council, City of Mairon, Illinois.
