Dausa Dow Hartwell was born on October 7, 1878 near Johnston City, Illinois. His parents were John L.D. Hartwell and Nancy Elizabeth Hartwell. Hartwell had completed his medical education and was practicing under the tutelage of Dr. Alonzo Baker in 1900. He lived with Dr. Baker’s family in Grassy Precinct on the west side of the county. On December 10, 1906, the “Thorne Club Place” was certified as a legally organized corporation by the State of Illinois. The club consisted of five men who created the club as a social gentlemen’s club. The Club was constructed in 1907 and used as a social club and residence by the five men. On December 10,1906 James A. Rose, Secretary of State of Illinois certified the organization of “Thorne Place Club” as a legally organized corporation of the State of Illinois. Hosea V. Ferrell, Leon A. Colp, and Paul R. Colp transferred Lots 1 and 2 Block 7 Thorne Place to the Thorne Place Club on January 1, 1907. Continue reading
Although this photo of a home from the 1905 Souvenir History looks like it belongs on a Marion side street, the 1907 directory reveals that it was located at 206 E. Main Street. This should put the home on the corner of East Main and North Mechanic Streets across the street from the Marion Post Office. Continue reading
