Dr. Theodore Hudson was born August 12, 1850 in Pennsylvania, the son of Dr. and Mrs. John Atchinson Hudson. He was the oldest of three children, his brother, Dr. George Hudson of Canton, Iowa having died at the home of Dr. Theodore Hudson of Marion, and his older brother, Joseph Hudson, a farmer who lived south of Marion, the father of Georgia and Ruth Hudson. Memorial Day in Marion in 1937 finds the thinning ranks of Civil War veterans has dwindled to two Union soldiers, one of them a white man who shouldered a gun at the age of 15 years and the other a colored man who at the age of 17 went away to war from a Kentucky plantation with the echo of the slave-driver’s lash and the cries of beaten human beings echoing in his ears. The chance to experience a first-hand account of an adventure experienced by one of our Marion citizens over 135 years ago doesn’t come around very often. Such is the case with the following diary written by Brice Holland on his trip to the Black Hills in search of gold. Brice was accompanied by a handful of Marion residents in April 1877 when they made their way from St. Louis by paddle wheeler, wagon and by foot on their way cross country at a time when Native Americans had barely been bottled up in reservations. After seeing images of the old Citadel Building on the Marion Square in a January 2007 issue of Marion Living Magazine, Ms. Sharon DuPont of Johnston City wrote the magazine. She recounted the story about her uncle, Guy D. Hogan, who as a lad of three in 1919, fell down the elevator shaft located in the then active Marion State and Savings Bank building.
