From Marion’s beginnings in 1839, subscription schools of varying degrees of excellence were maintained at irregular intervals. In 1855, a four room frame building in the 200 Block of West Jefferson Street, was more than adequate for the city’s needs. Longfellow Elementary School opened its doors on a snowy day in January 1955. Former teacher Emily Deason (30 years at Longfellow) recalls the following: “We were teaching our students on the lower level of the old Washington School building located where the Williamson County Courthouse is now located. Fire early Thursday morning completely destroyed the Jefferson School building on East Boulevard. The loss of the building left nearly 250 pupils of grades from one to six without a school building. Continue reading
