Leroy A. Goddard was born in Marion, Illinois, June 22 1854, the son of James T. and Winifred (Spiller) Goddard. His grandparents from Virginia settled in 1832 near where Marion was afterwards located. Mr. Goddard’s father opened a general store in Bainbridge, near Marion, in 1841, and later moved to Marion and erected a three story brick building where the Marion State and Savings bank was located. Before Rose Hill Cemetery came into existence, Marion, Illinois citizens were buried at the old Marion Cemetery, aka Aikman Cemetery. When the city started growing and more space was required Rose Hill was established in 1884 and some of the graves were moved from the old cemetery. Continue reading

A brochure reflecting the architectural style and history of several of Marion’s homes, business and civic buildings. This brochure was created at the College of Technical Careers, Quigley Computer Graphics Laboratory, Southern Illinois University. Funding was provided by the Greater Marion Area Chamber of Commerce, Williamson County Tourism Council, City of Mairon, Illinois.
